Car seat rules: Holidays!

Exploring the world with your baby can be an exciting adventure. Whether you're planning a road trip in the USA or a city break in Europe, it’s important to understand international car seat laws to ensure safe and hassle-free travel. Below, we provide essential information on car seat regulations and travel tips to keep your child secure on the go.

Car seat laws around the world

Car seat regulations vary from country to country, and in the United States, even from state to state. Many people are unsure about car seat laws in their own country, making it even more challenging to navigate regulations abroad. Failure to comply with local laws can result in fines, which can quickly put a damper on your holiday. To ensure you’re following the correct safety guidelines, always check the road safety rules of your destination before traveling.

Car Rentals and Car Seats

If you're renting a car while on holiday, you can usually book a child car seat at the same time. However, bringing your own car seat may be the better option to ensure maximum safety and comfort for your child.

Flying with a Car Seat

For air travel, infants can sit in their car seat on the plane if you have booked a separate seat for them, but airline policies vary. The car seat must have a label confirming it is certified for use on aircraft, but this alone does not guarantee acceptance. Additionally, the TÜV issues "airplane approval" labels, but both the car seat and the exact aircraft model must be certified for use. To avoid any issues, always check with your airline in advance.

Do Car Seat Laws Differ Within Europe?

Yes, regulations vary across European countries. Some nations have specific rules about when children can sit in the front seat or how car seats should be used in taxis. Regardless of where you travel in the EU, children must always use a car seat that matches their size and weight according to ECE R44 and R129 standards

For example, in Spain, children under 135 cm tall must sit in the back seat of the car.
